Brand Identity: Choosing the right brand name
Choosing the right name can be quite difficult when starting a company or building a brand. Sometimes you run into issues because the name is too generic, and sometimes you accidentally step on the toes of giants. That's exactly what happened to me. Around 2012, I started my journey with Unity. Back then, it was Unity 5.6.1. Long before the days of Unity 2021, 2022, or even Unity 6. I started by building small games, but soon found that creating tools for Unity was even more fun. At the same time, I became interested in cybersecurity because I couldn't find many good solutions that I could also apply to my games. I started with an Obfuscator. Obfuscation is relatively simple, it makes code difficult for humans to read, which makes life harder for hackers. After that, I moved on to an Anti-Cheat tool, and things continued to grow from there. The tools I released on the Unity Asset Store gradually established the brand name OrangePearSoftware. Why that name? I honestly don't know, maybe because orange is my favorite color. Things went well, and in 2019 I thought, "Why not secure the brand?" So I registered the trademark in Germany and Europe. As many of you know, these things take time, around six months until everything becomes official. Near the end of the process, in February 2020, I was contacted by the telecommunications corporation Orange Group. They politely asked me to remove the "Orange" part of the name and revoke the European trademark application. Fair enough, I did exactly that. But now I was back at the starting point. How should I continue? What should I name the company? I thought about what I actually do with my tools: securing software. So why not "Guarding"? And so I renamed the company to GuardingPearSoftware, a name that I actually like even more. So what's the lesson? A brand name is important. It's part of your identity, but it can also change. Don't make the same mistake I did and register a trademark without first talking to a lawyer. It can save you quite a bit of money. I can tell you that from experience. And that's the short story of how GuardingPearSoftware got its name. Have a great day, friends.
