LZ4HC

Definition

LZ4HC is the high-compression form of LZ4. The compressor searches longer for matches, so compression takes more time and the file is smaller than plain LZ4, though usually still larger than LZMA. The chunks stay in the LZ4 format, so decompression is just as fast, and one chunk can still be unpacked on its own.

Relevance

LZ4HC trades a longer build for a smaller file, while loads stay as fast as LZ4. The chunks are still LZ4, so a loader that reads LZ4 reads LZ4HC, and one chunk can still be unpacked on its own.

Example

You switch a local content bundle from LZ4 to LZ4HC before release. The build takes longer and the file gets smaller. In the game, scenes still load by chunk at LZ4 speed. Unpacking one chunk still yields the original assets.
