Gzip

Definition

Gzip compresses a stream with DEFLATE. DEFLATE finds repeated byte sequences with LZ77, then packs those matches with Huffman coding. The result is one stream, so reading the end means unpacking from the start. The ratio is solid, and decompression is quick enough for a file you download once.

Relevance

A Gzip WebGL build is smaller to download, so players start faster. The browser unpacks the whole file before the player runs, so startup is the download plus one decompression.

Example

You publish a WebGL game with Compression Format set to Gzip. The host serves the compressed file. The browser unpacks it into the same player data you would have shipped uncompressed.
